10:00 am – 11:00 am
Online

Describing his famous “Iceberg Theory,” Hemingway wrote, “If a writer of prose knows enough about what he is writing he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water.”

In this one-hour webinar, learn how this “theory of omission” works in fiction writing, developing tools and techniques for crafting theme and subtext through dialogue, inference, and careful revision.

Cara Hedley is the author of Twenty Miles, the first Canadian hockey novel about women players. Twenty Miles was nominated for the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction and included on CBC Books’ “list of Canada’s greatest hockey books.” With a Ph.D. in English literature and Creative Writing from the University of Calgary, Hedley is an editor and writing instructor for the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Continuing Education.
